Zimbabwe: Red Drama as Highlanders Shoots To the Top

There was drama in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League match played at Barbourfields Stadium Wednesday when Highlanders scored in the 15th minute of added time to beat Triangle 1-0, while Dynamos and Harare City were held.

The late winner by the Bulawayo Kings saw them shooting to the summit of the log with 51 points being closely trailed by Dynamos and Harare City who are both at 50 points.

Triangle ended the match with (9) nine men after Limited Chikafa and the goalkeeper Brighton Chipula were red carded and coach Gishon Ntini was also booted off the pitch.

The events started when Triangle was substituting Limited Chikafa, who took his time to leave the field and went to his penalty area to give the captain’s armband to another player, the referee flashed a yellow card for time wasting, which actually happened to be Chikafa’s second and was instantly flung into a red card.

Chikafa and team-mates protested and it took the intervention of police officers to make him leave the field. That was after about 5 minutes of intense grueling and quarelling.

The second incident occurred when former Dynamos player Mapfumo, allegedly told the goalkeeper to lay down in between the goalpost as if he had been hit by a missile from the fans. The assistant referee was watching, so was the referee who immediately rushed to the scene and flashed a yellow card. It was then during this time that the goalkeeper seemed to be saying something to the referee as he refused to be stretched off the field of play resulting in him getting the second yellow card of the day which sent him to the terraces and his resistance to leave the field of play was then coupled by close to 10 minutes of protest by the Triangle players.

According to FIFA law number 7, the referee decides on the time lost in each period. It states that an allowance is made in either period for the time lost through: 1)substitutions 2)the assessment of players’ injuries 3)the removal of injured players from the field of play for treatment 4)time-wasting 5)when the playing is stopped for different reasons (e.g. critical weather conditions, goalpost broken, floodlights failure.)

The law again goes to say that the fourth official indicates the minimum additional time decided by the referee at the end of the final minute of each period of play. The announcement of the additional time does not indicate the exact amount of time left in the match. The time may be increased if the referee considers it appropriate but never reduced.

It is then that the referee added 16 minutes to the game in which Highlanders scored through Ozias Zibande in the 15th minute of the added time to take a crucial three points that could decide the league title race.

At Rufaro Stadium, Dynamos wasted chances in the first half against Shabanie and looked toothless upfront with Simba Sithole and Boban Zirnutsa all guilty of letting chances slip.

In the second half Dynamos came back more determined and some fine build up play allowed Tichaona Mabvura to put the defending champions in front. Ocean Mushure struck the wood work a few minutes after as Dynamos stepped up their game. However Shabanie were determined not to go down without a fight and leveled matters through Fungai Chirinda in the 73rd minute.

Dynamos could have walked away with all three points but continued not to take their chances as the game went on and 1-1 is how it ended.

At the National Sports Stadium, Black Rhinos ensured that they live to fight another day for their premier league survival after dismissing Caps United 3-2. Brighton Mugoni, Brian Muzondiwa and Lot Chiungwa grabbed the goal for the army side while Caps United tried to fight in vain with a great goal from Ronald Pfumbidza and from a corner kick and a goal from Brian Maglasi.

Meanwhile Tendai Ndor grabbed his 17th goal of the season as Chicken Inn thrashed Division One bound Tripple B 4-1. Moses Jackson , Mkhokheli Dube Clement Matawu were also on the score sheet for the Gamecocks, Tripple B got a conslotion through Lloyd Chiwaridzo.

In Zvishavane a brace by Donald Ngoma and an opening goal by Nelson Maziwisa gave FC Platinum a comfortable 3-1 lead over Black Mambas at Mandava Stadium.

Until they score! Kkkkkkk. Congratulations Bosso. It was your day. Soccer is a game of controversy coz it played by people with lots of energy and watched/supported by people with lots of adrenaline. I’m DeMbare but would not care much if Bosso clinch it this season. They have tried hard in the past, especialy last season. The pay cheque should come their way one day.

DeMbare has itself to blame. Same with Hre City. They should have done their business quietly by beating their opponents. Anyway, all the top three teams – Bosso, DeMbare and Hre City – have very good chances of landing the championship. BUT don’t forget FC Platinum. May the best tesm of the season win it FAIRLY!

My heart bleeds for Motor Avtion and Monomotapa. The cataclysmic fall is very telling. The PSL will never the same without these two teams. All the best in D1.

Sorry Geshon Ntini. Your game plan was against the tenets of fairplay. Mutambo kani nhayi wehama! You dont have to do it the Aly Ahly (Egypty) style, who decided to blind the other brother in a game (Umdlalo, mutambo). Hey some people go to lenghts to in theri quest to achieve targets. It is obvious that the unruely behaviour of those youngsters your coaching is derived from you Ntini. Shame on you. “KWENZANI LOKHU ENDLELENI BAZAKU GXOBA, IVA APO IWE”
      bye Ntini

They can fool death as well…..they are warming-up for Dembare….i think they know it.

Good reporting editor, but why waste time telling us what happened in Rufaro. You spoiled a good story. Chando in politics when the going gets tough one has to rig but in soccer you play outside the rules and risk a red card if the reff the ref is fair. It could easily have been 10 zero.
In anycase a win is win. Where is the fake refugee?

I think people who do not know the laws of the beautiful game should keep quiet than demonise a referee who did exactly what is expected of him.

He realised that Chikafa was intentinally delaying getting off the field of play and rightly gave him a yellow card, and fortunately or unfortunately(to some)that was his second yellow ( a yellow card + a yellow)= a red, and it was the same with the goal keeper.

I think its very wise for these players (and its supporters)to read the FIFA statutes of fair play, it will certainly help them know the game better!!!

    • Ndumiso.

Yandinakidaza ndeyekuti a player asked the keeper to pretend he has been hit by a missile, why was the missile thrown in the first place and really a reporter hearing a player instructing a goalie to go down and pretend he is injured? Mozotu Sharuko mu DeMbare ko uyu?
