Pictures of food donations to the Embassy of Zimbabwe in London went viral on social networks following revelations that the government of Zimbabwe has not paid diplomatic staff for months to date and the foreign missions face ejection from the properties they occupy over non-payment of rentals.
An appeal notice for Christmas food donations was put up at the London embassy building entrance today, as seen on pictures.
Members of the public have left food staffs on the door step in response to the appeal. Food items donated include a bag of potatoes, peanut butter, pasta, bath soap among other basic necessities.
Early this year it emerged that Zimbabwe’s embassies were struggling with a debt of $13 million. Reports said so poor were the foreign missions that some were relying on “high maintenance vehicles.”
It is believed that the diplomats have not been paid for the past 20 months as the government struggles to balance its books.
At the time of posting the embassy was already closed. It is believed disgruntled Zimbabweans, unhappy with the political and economic crisis under the Zanu PF government made the Christmas food appeal on behalf of the unpaid embassy staff, something however loudly communicated as an insult in protest.
