Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Saturday expressed shock and disgust at attacks on immigrants in neighbouring South Africa and said his government was working to bring back home affected Zimbabwean citizens.
At least four people have been killed in a wave of anti-immigrant violence in South Africa that started two weeks ago in the port city of Durban and spread to Johannesburg.
Mugabe said during a speech at a football stadium in the capital Harare to mark 35 years of Zimbabwe’s independence that all Africans in South Africa should be treated with dignity.
“I would want now to express our sense of shock, disgust as we abhor the incidences which happened in Durban,” Mugabe said.
“The act of treating other Africans in that horrible way can never be condoned by anyone,” said the 91-year-old, speaking on behalf of the regional Southern African Development Community and African Union, both of which he currently chairs.
An estimated one million Zimbabweans live in South Africa having escaped an economic crisis and political violence at home over the last 15 years.
Periodic outbreaks of anti-immigrant violence in South Africa have been blamed on high unemployment, widespread poverty and glaring income disparities.
The Malawian government has hired buses to repatriate 500 of its nationals, Information Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa said on Friday. He urged South Africa to provide greater protection for immigrants, echoing demands from China and the African Union.
Mugabe said his government had put in place measures to bring back its citizens but did not give details.
The state-owned Herald newspaper reported that Zimbabwe planned to repatriate 1,000 citizens and was setting up a receiving centre at Beitbridge, the biggest border post with South Africa. – Reuters

  1. Completely untrue what you say about King Zwelithini … But why aren’t you commenting about a man who has killed and maimed … and continues to kill and maim? Even as you write, someone has ‘disappeared’ in common fashion. Let’s hear you speak

  9. But the problem is that the violence has been targeted at immigrant shops, not some shady businesses you are referring to. I really don’t think this is about crime, but competing for a fewer breadcrumbs. South African government should come out clear on it’s policies and then enforce the immigration laws that are in the books.
If your policies are to protect locals against immigrant competition, then place a cap on the number of foreigners who are allowed into retail business. Don’t create a situation where locals take the law into their own hands.

  12. Too little too late! Why has this fossil been quiet all along? Was it the shame of being responsible for pushing your people out of the country to face xenophobia because of your failed policies, and the desire to stay in power?

  15. This from a man who boasts of several degrees in violence. A man who massacred 20 000 people during gukurahundi and 300 opposition supporters after losing an election. A man who has destroyed his country’s economy thereby sending his people into the devils den. No Mugabe as much as we condemn the savages in south Africa you are one of them.

  18. He is not sincere and knows that he also promotes tribalism in Zimbabwe . They have no regard for opposition lives, they themselves have mimed and killed their own. Very sad indeed.
I think he maybe rejoicing deep down thinking that everyone in diaspora is MDC. This explains this late protest if any.

  21. But these leaders who express shock about whats happening down south, are the architects of evil that has killed many and making people disappear in brad daylight. Couldn’t anybody brave shout where Itai Dzamara is?
They talk the language of “kudashurwa” and cause all manner of violence and evil to their perceived political enemies and are now shading crocodile tears when the very people who ran away from them are being subjected to xenophobia.

  24. This afrophobia was triggered by a speech by king zwelithini. You must look at what he is saying. He is angry that foreigners are committing crimes in South africa. In the USA foreigners also are reagrded as taking over USA shops, but the difference lies in the fact that they are regarded as improving the economy and employing people. I have lived in Durban, rehabilitating commercial sex workers and I know exactly what Zwelithini is talking about.
Nigerians are going to rural areas, paying lobola deposit on innocent zulu girls, taking them to the city, giving them crack cocaine and forcing their ‘wives’ to engage in prostitution. If the ‘wife’ complains she is badly beaten. If she refuses she is fed cocaine and thrown off a buiding. The police do a test and when cocaine is found, they blame the drugs and do no more investigations.
When the hardened prostitute who was a former cultured innocent virgin is arrested for plying the trade, her former ‘dream husband’ pays off the police. This crime is rampant. This abuse is rampant. When the hardened prostitute is sick, weak and unable to make money she is sent home. The parents are devastated. This has been getting back to the kind and he is angry. So what is the solution? hate nigerian week? No. Many nigerians are doing what they should do- living peacefully, energising the economy and living righteously. The solution is obvious- prosecute the criminals.
The SAP is partly to blame and they must make it not worthwhile to ply criminal activity in RSA. They must refuse bribes. This will keep the righteous and chase the wicked.
