A journalist and photographer working for the Daily News paper, who is known for photographing self-styled war veterans leader Joseph Chinotimba while in fluid dance moves, was arrested yesterday while covering a story on Monday.
Watson Ufumeli, was taken by the police law and order section while covering a raid by members of the police force on the offices of the Counselling Services Unit (CSU) in Harare.
Police officers had swooped into the officies of the CSU and arrested the workers.
The officers raided the offices in search of what they said was offensive and subversive material.
His arrest has been condemned by leading lawyers.
Prominent media lawyer, Alec Muchedehama, castigated Ufumeli’s arrest stating that “the laws in Zimbabwe are not friendly to the practice of journalism or the free flow of information.”
Ofumeli was taken to Harare Central Police station where he was briefly detained and only released after being forced to delete the pictures that he had taken. He was arrested together with five CSU members of staff, the media institute of Southern African, MISA said in a statement
Daily News group editor, Stanely Gama described Ofumeli’s arrest as an assault on press freedom.

It’s unfortunate this incident happened between a journalist fron the Independent media camp and a ZANU-PF aligned target. I thought it was journalistic etiquette to first ask for permission from your target before taking someone photograph and Umfumeli may not have done that. Maybe I am wrong but let’s not use our adrenal glands to think, I always say.
