Nkomo took over from the late VP Joseph Msika who died in August.

He won the Vice Presidency after shedding off challenge from Zanu-PF bigwigs Minies Minister Obert Mpofu, Senate deputy president Naison Ndlovu and Bulawayo governor Cain Mathema.

Following the signing of the Global Political Agreement (GPA), Nkomo became the Minister of State for National Healing, Reconciliation and Integration.

Born in 1934 in the Tsholotsho District, Matabeleland North Province, Nkomo has assumed a Zanu-PF national role since 1999 and also served in various capacities of Deputy Minister of Industry and Energy (1981), Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (1982-1984).

Nkomo was Labour Minister, Manpower Planning and Social Welfare (1988-1992) and Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare (1992-1995).

He was named Local Government Minister between 1995 and 1997, before he became minister in the renamed Ministry of Local Government and National Housing (1997-1999) and Minister of Home Affairs (2000-2002).

He was Speaker of Parliament from 2002 until 2005.

Mugabe excommunicated Canaan Banana BUT he will pacify Nkomo because the old man desperately needs the support of the Ndebele people – Here we see the two of them stride together hand to hand – maybe with some music in the background – what a joke!
