Buhera South Legislator Joseph Chinotimba who has been awarded Human Rights Defender of the Year, has rejected his prize saying will rather donating it to his constituency’s poor people.
The MP said he is giving the luxury-prize handed him Friday to poor villagers from his community who can not make a meal during the Christmas and festive period.
“I refuse to use this prize for my own pleasure. This is for the people who elected me to that post, the very people who struggle every day to make ends meet,” said Chinotimba.
He added saying that in direct response to his decision “the award sponsors (Holiday Inn) have promised to purchase building material for the classrooms destroyed by the rains. They also promised to do more for my constituency, so far World Vision is the only organisation helping in the area,” he said.
The controversial legislator received the award last week in a development that caused loud whispers across the whole country as numerous human rights activists protested saying he does deserve any recognition whatsoever in relation to the betterment of humanity in the country.
“How can this same person who murdered people be the same who gets such a top award,” questioned London activist Tim Nkomo.
The award has received sharp criticism from the white Zimbabwean community who were victimised by Chinotimba’s war veterans association during Robert Mugabe’s chaotic farm invasions which began in 2000.
Defending the award in which Chinotimba was ranked tall alongside notable international figures the likes of fearless lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa, journalist Jestina Mukoko, Mrs Rebecca Chisamba, and Harare West MP Jessie Majome, the ZimRights organisation said the recognition was a collective and populist nomination from provinces across the country.

  2. Brother Chinotimba you are now starting to see the Light. Well done brother you should give back all to the poor villagers, not only in your village but in other villages as well. May God forgive you and Bless you. We need people like you who are now coming to their senses. All wealth on this earth stays here on this earth and we don’t go with it to Heaven. We go with nothing but if you give all to the poor you shall have everything in the next life. AMEN. Messenger Of God
