BULAWAYO- A Bulawayo civic youth organisation, Bulawayo Unemployment Youth Agenda (BUYA) has vowed to engage fast food chain Chicken Slice over its employing of people who are exclusively from outside Matebeleland.
Speaking at a press conference held in Bulawayo Thursday, BUYA Chairperson, Zenzo Nyoni said time has come for people of Matebeleland to benefit from resources within their region.
“We want to engage Chicken Slice because we have realised that the majority of its employees are Shona. Our youths are not afforded the opportunity to work and we feel something needs to be done,” said Nyoni.
He also said his organisation will engage different sectors to ensure that youths in Bulawayo are given fair employment opportunities like what is happening to youths from other different regions of the country.
“Youths from Matebeleland are looking for job opportunities in South Africa and Botswana. It is high time devolution is put into practise for the benefit of the youths and the region at large,” he added.
Nyoni also took the event to congratulate people from Maleme community for defending their land against foreigners who wanted to benefit from resources without putting into cognisance the community surrounding them.
He said it is that kind of courage which is needed to arrest the marginalisation and under-development of the Matebeleland region.

  2. Mfombi crew what qualifications does one need to work as a cleaner at chicken slice? Do not be subjective, you have to be objective. Have you conducted a survey for you to conclude that Ndebele youths are like that? Do not generalize things

  4. The thing is Ndebele folks are lazy & expect to be handed jobs even if not qualified. In diaspora people can now tell the difference between a shona & Ndebele based on work ethic…too lazy & they just love booze #Fact

  8. Instead of foolishly inciting racial tensions Buya should be encouraging the Matebeleland youth to take advantage of the opportunities. If they don’t further their education or apply for the job you cant blame anybody for that.If the youth are fanning tribalism instead of promoting tolerance then we fear to think where they wish to take this country. Its a cheap publicity stunt that should be abandoned forthwith.

  10. This BUYA thing is devilish, they want to start something they can not finish, i cant imagine they still linger on tribal lines till today, when the world has become a global village. As i was well informed, the gukurahundi genocide was ignited by their rowdy behavior these so called ndebeles. They were cleaning all shonas slowly from Bulawayo, they had actually formed secret wiping machines who were meant to wipe all shonas from Bulawayo, and it was supposed to look like people were just being killed by robbers after drinking sprees. I don’t support what happened but sometimes we just have to realize that these people hate other tribes, especially shonas who are naturally a bigger tribe than theirs. Ndebeles you can continue with your so called tribal wars, but hey, the future might not hold a good record for you. History has always repeated itself.

  16. At issue is the question of employing people speaking the same language, as opposed to the local population. This on its own, boarders on tribal discrimination. The( BUY) have a very strong point, both ; morally, politically, as well as, legally.

  24. This Nyoni guy is talking nosense. Am based here in Mutare where I work; in my department we are 8. But 6 are from Bulawayo. They came here not only being pure Ndebeles but also not managing to utter one shona word!!! But today vatove anaSamanyika!! We work nicely with no quarrels. To the contrary; in 2013 I travelled all the way from Mutare to Byo for an interview @ a certain big NGO operating in Gwanda; Bulilima & Mangwe. The interview was in 2 parts- written and oral. After excelling in the written; I was selected to proceed to oral. I passed the interview. The Interviewers congratulated me for landing the “Senior position”. I was asked when I was prepared to start to which I said : I needed one calendar month. They agreed saying in the mean time they will be drafting my contract which I would sign upon commencement of duty. However; barely 5 days later; I was foned by “The Director” – a pure Ndebele – judging with her ascent; asking me if I speak ndebele – to which I said No.- but willing to learn. She told me “We are sorry; we needed someone who is fluent in Ndebele”.I had not signed any contract and so the rest is history!! From that day; I have vowed to say for as long I am in a position of power ; like as it is right now; NO Ndebele person will ever get employment ahead of a shona. You may say whatever you want!! So be it!!! Imi maNdebele build Chicken Slice yenyu and employ your selves!!!!

  28. The so called Shonas (better called Zimbabweans) were in that region before the so called Matebele arrived from South. Employers should take workers on merit , not ethnic criteria. Any emotions that border on inciting tribalism should be avoided. BUYA must not think any part of Zimbabwe belongs too silly ethnic pockets. Why worry about language speaking when we have all been glued to English in most of the cases , even names of what we sell in that shop. BUYA members must compete on merit not ethnic tags. Always remember why the Shona speaking are the majority in this country. Shona speaking people owe no apology to anyone for that , and should not feel guilty either.

  30. The ugly head of tribalism being raised by Shonas in Matebeleland, the Nyonis and Musavenganas. Musavengana are you not contradicting your name by creating a fertile environment that pits Ndebeles against your own people the Shonas? I do not condone segregation of any Zimbabwean on the basis of their tribe or whatever definition. If it is being done deliberately, definitely the company has a case to answer in the courts of the land, not in the streets of Bulawayo. A Shona is not a foreigner in Matebeleland and a Ndebele is not a foreigner in Mashonaland. Zimbabwe belongs to all who live in it. Could we please have responsible activism. It is so easy to ignite flames that will be difficult to extinguish.

  32. “The majority of those employed are shonas”, When I opened this piece of news I wanted to support these guys, but their stance is tribal now. I thought Ndebeles are not employed there at all, because everywhere in Zimbabwe shonas are majority. 80% Shonas to 18% Ndebeles. Go to Chegutu fastfoods on the high way, one franchise is being run by a Ndebele guy and a number of employees are Ndebele. No shona complain

  34. True. Many Shonas were born in Bulawayo then it means that these can speak the local language in addition to their mother language. After all at school they would have learnt Ndebele. It is stupid to believe that Bulawayo was Shona territory. This is Kalanga land historically. Chicken Slice must change!

  36. This is tribalism. There are so many shona speaking people who were born in Bulawayo and educated there. To assume that every shona speaking person is from outside Matabeleland is the most unfortunate. This would be read to mean that all ndebele speaking people permanently based in mashonaland must not work there but come to matabeleland. BUYA must not be so blinkered and think that the reasons why Matabeleland was called as such entails that it must be occupied by only ndebeles. Also BUYA must remember that Ndebeles are aliens historically and must thank the original occupants (the shonas) for accepting them in the country.
