Talks to resume Sunday
Staff Reporter [30-07-08 1950]
Talks between ZANU PF and the opposition MDC aimed at finding a solution to the country's political impasse are expected to resume on Sunday, South African President Thabo Mbeki said on Wednesday.
Mbeki told journalists after meeting President Mugabe in Harare. The meeting comes after the adjournment by negotiators from the ruling party and the opposition to consult principals on the sticking points in the negotiating process.
Mbeki said: "We came just to brief the president about how far the negotiating process has gone. I met Mr Tsvangirai yesterday (Tuesday) in Pretoria and did the same. I am going to meet with Arthur Mutambara now to do the same. It is just to brief the principals about how far the talks are progressing"
"Naturally they are some matters which will require that the negotiators come back to consult their principals, that's why they are in Harare today (Wednesday). The negotiators are trying very hard to keep to the time frame we all committed ourselves in the Memorandum of Understanding."
In an earlier address Mugabe said ZANU PF is committed to the talks.
"We're still negotiating, we want to succeed. Negotiations are negotiations; they are not a card game... You find room for compromise, sometimes compromise is difficult and you stand by your proposals as presented," Mugabe said.
Mugabe added: "You debate again and again and reach a compromise. I understand the talks are going well."
This was the first time he has commented on the talks since the signing of the memorandum of understanding on the 21st of July.
Mbeki denied on Tuesday that talks had reached a deadlock.
Zimbabwe's political leaders are under pressure to iron out differences to find a lasting solution to the deepening economic crisis.
A two-week deadline for completing the talks runs out on August 4, but it could be extended.
Proposals for a transitional or government of national unity has been floated but the two parties are yet to agree on the settlement.
