Talks have not collapsed - claims African diplomat
Staff Reporter 13-08-08
Zimbabwe's main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai met African diplomats in Harare on Wednesday to brief them
about his party's position in the ongoing talks between the ruling party and the two Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) formations.
Tsvangirai convened the meeting to clear the air over speculations that a deal had been sealed between Arthur Mutambara's party and ZANU PF to form a new government.
On leaving the meeting venue at a local hotel, Tsvangirai only said: "The meeting went on well." He did not give more details of the meeting.
Speculation was high on Tuesday that the negotiations had collapsed following Tsvangirai's haste departure from the talks venue.
In an interview with ZimEye, the dean of the diplomatic cops and the Democratic Republic of Congo ambassador to Zimbabwe Mawapanga Mwana Nanga said the diplomats were quite appreciative of Tsvangirai's initiative to brief the diplomats as it has put them into the true perspective of the talks.
"We had a frank discussion with Mr Tsvangirai and now we can see the perspective of the talks than what is being reported in the media. Contrary to what the media has been reporting, the talks have not collapsed. Zimbabweans really want to see a resolution to the current issues." he said.
The weekend marathon talks were expected to come out with a power sharing deal to form an all inclusive government.
However the talks had to adjourn late Tuesday following Tsvangirai's request for an extension to reflect on one aspect he had earlier on agreed to.
South African President Mbeki who is facilitating the talks left Harare on Wednesday for Angola to brief President Eduardo dos Santos ahead of Saturdays SADC summit in South Africa.
The regional body has put pressure on Zimbabwe's political leadership to find a settlement to the current political impasse.
Regional countries such as Botswana have voiced out on the Zimbabwean situation taking a position that they will not attend the summit if President Mugabe attends the meeting as they do not recognise the legitimacy of his leadership.
