Massive theft at DHL Johannesburg
By Walter Chirombo
The reputation of world courier DHL hung in a balance on Friday after a shipment to Zimbabwe was allegedly stolen while in Johannesburg.
Mrs Tracy Chatara (her identity has been concealed) of Leeds in the UK who spoke to the ZimEye told of how her article destined for Zimbabwe was suddenly reported as lost after arriving in South Africa for Zimbabwe.
Staff Reporter [08/06/2008 10:30]
At the close of day on Thursday 05 June 2008, information from the Harare office was stating that the package was still in South Africa, a month later since the day of dispatching.
In the UK, a certain Jackie had informed the client, Mrs Chatara that the shipment had been lost in South Africa after a month’s search for the package.
DHL have yet to give a written apology apart from a mere verbal one given via phone.
The shipment estimated to be worth about £2000, R28000 is believed to be among many other packages stolen but which DHL still cannot give concrete answers apart from merely stating that they have gone missing. However, DHL’s tracking system was brought under serious scrutiny after having been questioned why it took them a whole month to ascertain that a coded shipment had gone missing.
‘I am very sorry to let you know that we have been unable to find the shipment and we are going to have to declare it lost… I will put a claim form through for you to our claims department and you will hear from them in the next two or three working days. If you have any queries, please come back to us…’ said one DHL staff member Jackie in a voice mail message to Tracy Chatara.
DHL Global forwarding staff, Victoria Fielding, Rachael Dixon, and Stephen Hannigan who were all consulted on this matter still had not responded to this quest at the time of writing of this article.
South Africa’s reputation has continued to go down the drain as more cases of theft, robbery and murder xenophobia, are reported weekly. Last year musician Lucky Dube was murdered in cold blood. A few weeks later, MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai was robbed at gun point by robbers who took away various computer equipment and money - ZimEye
