Bulawayo - It was daylight drama during the last two weeks of
September when senior ZAPU war veterans confiscated a fleet of
vehicles from ZANU PF which they claim were taken during the arms
cache incident of the 1980's.
This
historic drama began on the 14th of September when these vehicles were
taken from Davies Hall ZANU PF Headquarters. A source who spoke to
ZimEye on condition of anonymity said the cars were handed over to
ZAPU officials by Macleod Chawe who is the ZANU PF chairman for the
province.
These
vehicles were with ZAPU since Sept 14. Smile Dube, a ZAPU loyalist has
been seen in public driving one of these cars which are all 4x4 Isuzu
KBs about ten in number. He was seen cruising with the car while attending a chiefs conference in
the capital Bulawayo.
During
the 1980's arms cache period, ZAPU lost it's companies Nitram, Castle
Arms, Blackcat Removals, and some farms many which were owned by the
late veteran Joshua Nkomo. After the finding of arms caches in
February 1982, ZANU accused ZAPU of plotting another war and ZAPU
leaders were arrested or removed from cabinet. Dumiso Dabengwa,
Lookout Masuku were locked up in a treason trial in 1982. All were
released although Dabengwa and Masuku were re-detained without trial
for four years. It is believed that during this period thousands of
Ndebeles were killed by Robert Mugabe's fifth Brigade, all culminating
to a surrender and compromise deal acceptance by Joshua Nkomo in 1987.
However, with a record falling economy and failing political grip,
both Ndebeles and Shona people no longer fear Robert Mugabe and his
party ZANU PF has begun to both feel and respect the strength of the
whirlwind of change which every day seems to be blowing boisterously
against their 29 year hold on power. |
