...the power sharing deal celebrates losers - ZCTU
By Blessed Chapwati 30-09-08
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says the recent power-sharing deal will not address the political and economic problems bewildering the country as it ‘celebrates losers.’
Addressing journalists in Harare Lovemore Matombo, the ZCTU president dismissed the September-15 deal signed by President Robert Mugabe and Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader as ‘a outcome of a flawed process.’
“The deal does not provide power-sharing, rather it creates a ceremonial prime minister and an executive president… It gives the prime minister a supervisory role of government business and the prime minister is at the mercy of the president. It was a rushed document only meant to for political accommodation of the MDC in an inclusive government,” said Matombo.
The address by Matombo comes on the hills of a meeting which Tsvangirai - a former ZCTU boss - had with the labour body on Saturday.
”Mr Tsvangirai made it clear that this was not the best he hoped for but a compromise agreement. In other words, the methods of the new government is left to the behest of the president,” said Matombo.
He took turns with Wellington Chibebe, the ZCTU secretary general to dismiss the deal that was brokered by former South African president Thabo Mbeki on behalf of SADC.
”Morgan found himself surrounded by losers. Mbeki lost (ANC presidency) in Polokwane, Mugabe lost in March and Mutambara lost in March and there was only one winner and you can only expect a document a document in favour of the winner? The answer is no,” said Chibebe.
In light of the increment of the maximum daily withdrawal from $1 000 to $20 000, Matombo said the ZCTU it had deferred its stayaway it had called for on 1 October. “But we maintain that there mustn’t be limits imposed by the RBZ,” he said. “But the ZCTU is dismayed by the RBZ move to allow shops to sell products in forex as this will seriously affect the ordinary people who have no access to foreign currency. The ZCTU reserves the right to take action as it may deem necessary.”
