TEAM ZIMBABWE JETS IN TODAY
Staff Reporter
It remains to be seen whether the same rousing welcome given to Kirsty
Coventry after her three medals at the Athens 2004 Olympic games will grace
her and the rest of team Zimbabwe when they jet down tomorrow at the Harare
International Airport.
Team Zimbabwe, which managed to secure 4 medals at the just ended Olympic games in China, all of which from Coventry in swimming have been ranked among the best performing African nation at this years and all again courtesy of the Harare swimmer. The Zimbabwe Olympic committee has been trying to mobilize people to go and welcome the team back home.
A ZOC board member Anna Mguni says Zimbabweans should find time to pay homage to the team after its success at the games.
“We would like everyone to come, the team did us proud and the least we can do is to say thank you by welcoming them back,” said Mguni.
A special route has been marked for a procession by the team which will be led by Coventry.
However most people interviewed said they could not afford to go the airport to welcome the team and thus will have to watch the team’s arrival on the television news.
“We would have wanted to go but the transport money ha mawani!” said Tawanda Chirera.
The team has also been lined up to make an appearance at the ongoing Harare agricultural show.
