Mugabe delivers a preacher-style speech at UN
By Bruce Murinda 26-09-08 0015H
New York– President Robert Mugabe used cunning preacher style language against the United Kingdom and the USA as he delivered his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday. Using obsolete religious terminology the aged leader called the UN Charter a 'sacred document' which must not be ‘abused’
‘…so its weight of sanctions should be applied to my small country which by any stretch of imagination is no threat to international peace and security. What insanity is this that has afflicted some world leaders? Should the sacred document the Charter of the United Nations be allowed to suffer such undeserved emasculation and disgraceful abuse? And where is the protection for small and innocent countries like mine…?’ A stern Mugabe eloquently read his speech, making his usual pauses at intervals.
He accused the United Kingdom and USA for their role in the war on terror in Iraq, calling them worst perpetrators of genocide and mass destruction
‘The innocent masses of men, women and children who perished …in Iraq surely demand retribution and vengeance. Who shall heed their cry? Mugabe lambasted.
The BBC’s UN Correspondent Laura Trevelyan, commented however on BBC news saying that Mr Mugabe is purely appealing for a reward for signing the deal.
‘A very clear message – the question is how will the international community take the deal’ she said.
Trevelyan also concluded saying that until the cabinet posts allocation has been finalised and Mr Mugabe has demonstrated thereby that he will abide by the terms of the agreement, the European Union will by no means release financial aid to Zimbabwe.
