Power-sharing talks in murky waters
By George Nyathi [18-10-08]
Harare (ZimEye)THE power-sharing talks between Zimbabwe's political parties could be sinking in murky waters following a deadlock reached at by Zanu PF leader, Robert Mugabe and MDC leader, Morgan Tsvangirai."
The deadlock, insiders disclosed, relates to the distribution of key ministries
that will form the basis of the new government.
The sources said there had been bickering, during the mediation process, between
Mugabe and Tsvangirai over the Finance and Home Affairs ministries, bickering
which mediator, Thabo Mbeki failed to resolve amicably."
"Even the mediator yesterday was clueless as to how this problem would be addressed," said a source close to the deliberations. He added that Tsvangirai had demanded that Mugabe cease his grip on eight other ministries that he had pronounced as in the hands of Zanu PF, adding that the MDC leader felt Mugabe had acted out of the confines of the agreement when he gazetted the allocation of ministries he had done.
"Tsvangirai felt that Mugabe had ignored the provisions of the agreement signed between them and that is where the misunderstanding comes from. He (Tsvangirai) feels that he has been compromising for quite some time and he is not prepared to do so again," said a source.
Speaking to journalists after the deadlock was pronounced, MDC national spokesperson, Nelson CHamisa said his party was contesting up to 10 ministries allocated by Mugabe to Zanu PF.
"We are not contesting the two ministries, that of FInance and that of Home Affairs alone as has been reported. We have up to 10 ministries that we want to have looked at because these are the key ministries in a serious government," said Chamisa.
