Unity Government talks fail, again. What next for Zimbabwe…
ANALYSIS By Danai Murehwa.
Contrary to what NewZimbabwe reported on Friday, MDC Vice President Ms Thokozani Khupe told reporters in Harare on Friday that the MDC has resolved not to join a government with Mr Robert Mugabe and his Zanu PF party.
After eagerly awaiting news of any updates during the past week when SADC’s ruled on Sunday, that the two parties (MDC & ZANU PF) should form a government of unity as well as the controversial Home Affairs Ministry, the future of Zimbabwe is still in limbo.
While it is being reported that the Zanu Pf party has asked its leader, Mugabe to form a government irregardless, the begging question is ‘will this then go ahead now that the MDC has officially stated that it will not be dragged and succumbed into the coalition government when its demands have not been met.’
The MDC council has also revealed the plot by Zanu PF to assassinate its leaders, which is among other reasons why they will not be part of the unity government.
Where, as a nation is Zimbabwe heading to when such news of an assassination plot against the MDC by Zanu PF has emerged and yet the SADC body expects these two parties to build the country together? The country’s situation is at a stand still and its getting worse by the day. The untold suffering of the ordinary people of Zimbabwe, who do not have the liberty and time to spend hours on end in five star rated hotels while sipping on bottles of mineral water failing to come to an amicable and mature resolution, continues.
Khupe also said that the MDC would not join the government until amendments of the GNU were met and other outstanding issues including the appointment of provincial governors are resolved.
With inflation running at more than 231 million percent, half of the population requires emergency food aid, while a breakdown in basic services has led to deadly outbreaks of cholera in Harare. Reports that the two major hospitals in Zimbabwe are on the verge of closing (Parirenyatwa and Harare Hospital) makes the situation even more desperate, the concerns and livelihood of Zimbabweans is only a dream that will hopefully come true when all this nightmare of indecisiveness by the people who are fighting to govern them..
Certainly, if Mugabe went along with forming a government without Tsvangirai it would be an illegitimate government and one that will not be recognized. This is the reason is why there is urgency for the GNU, in its true sense need to come to an agreement and respect the basis that were agreed initially in the setting up of the power sharing.
VOA news has reported that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and women and children’s rights advocate Graca Machel, widow of Mozambique’s first president and today the wife of former South African president Nelson Mandela, will visit Zimbabwe Nov. 22 and 23.
The group said they would assess the humanitarian crisis in hopes they may “add momentum to the global response to longer-term issues of reform and development” in the context of the stalled power-sharing negotiations between the ZANU-PF party of President Robert Mugabe and Movement for Democratic Change of prime minister-designate Morgan Tsvangirai.
Zimabweans at large hope that this will be fruitful and will yield at least some positive results for the country. Maybe our so called “leaders” will realise the importance of healthy nation and will lead the country to a better place, peacefully.
From here we again, eagerly wait, anticipating a positive way forward with the hope that maybe MDC, Zanu PF, SADC and the AU will come to a more feasible resolution and bring to end the untold suffering of the people Zimbabwe
